How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Utah County Home?

A deep-clean cadence based on home size, pets, kids, and Utah’s unique seasonal challenges. The real answer is more nuanced than “twice a year.”

“How often should I deep clean?” is in our top 3 most-asked questions. The honest answer is: it depends. A two-person condo in downtown Provo with no pets needs a different schedule than a five-bedroom Highland home with three dogs and a HEPA filter that hasn’t been changed since 2022.

Here’s the framework I use when consulting with new clients on a deep-clean cadence — based on six years cleaning Utah County homes and what actually keeps them looking and feeling fresh.

The baseline: Twice a year is the absolute minimum

For any Utah County home — even a tidy one — twice a year is the floor. Once after winter inversion ends (April–May) and once before holidays (October–November). This handles the worst seasonal dust loads and resets the home before guest-heavy months.

Skipping this baseline means dust, allergens, hard-water buildup, and grease compound year over year. By year three, you’re looking at deep-clean costs 30–50% higher because we have to undo more buildup.

Quarterly is the sweet spot for most

For a typical Utah County home — 2,500–3,500 sq ft, 2 adults, 1–2 kids, maybe a dog — every 3 months hits the sweet spot. Once per season:

  • March–April: post-inversion dust + allergen reset
  • June–July: mid-summer freshen, focus on entryway dust + pollen
  • September–October: pre-holiday deep, focus on guest spaces
  • December–January: winter reset, focus on dry-air dust + furnace return vents

This rhythm keeps every layer of buildup from compounding. Most of our quarterly clients report their homes feel “fresh as new” year-round.

Monthly deep cleans for high-load homes

If you check three or more of these boxes, monthly deep cleans make sense:

  • 3+ kids under 12
  • 2+ pets, especially shedding breeds (Goldens, Huskies, etc.)
  • Severe allergies in the household
  • Home over 4,000 sq ft
  • You entertain often (book club, hosting in-laws, Sunday dinners)
  • Someone in the home is immunocompromised

Monthly deep clean + bi-weekly maintenance is what we’d call the “gold standard” schedule. Roughly 40% of our Lehi and Highland estate clients are on this schedule.

Special triggers that warrant a deep clean

Beyond the regular schedule, certain life events should always trigger an extra deep clean:

  • Moving in or out: Always. (See our move-out checklist.)
  • After a remodel or paint job: Drywall dust gets everywhere.
  • Hosting a holiday gathering or wedding event: 1–2 days before.
  • Welcoming a new baby: Pre-arrival deep clean is one of the most-requested gifts at Utah County baby showers.
  • Recovering from sickness in the household: Deep disinfect after flu/COVID/strep.
  • Coming home from a long trip: Empty homes accumulate dust faster than lived-in ones.

Utah-specific factors

A few things make Utah County different from cleaning advice you’ll read for other parts of the country:

Inversion season (Jan–Mar): Air quality regularly hits “unhealthy.” Fine particulates settle on every horizontal surface. We recommend a dedicated post-inversion deep clean in mid-March.

Hard water: Mineral buildup accumulates faster here than in soft-water regions. Even a tidy home will see crust on faucets and showerheads in 90 days. Deep clean addresses this; weekly cleans usually don’t.

Dry-desert dust: Static dust clings differently here. Microfiber + slightly damp wipes work; dusters often just relocate dust. Deep cleans use the right tools.

Forced-air heating: Most modern Utah homes have aggressive air movement that distributes dust constantly. Vent + register cleaning during deep cleans makes a noticeable difference.

A simple rule of thumb

If you can’t remember the last deep clean, it’s overdue.

If three months ago feels like a long time ago, you’re probably overdue.

If you’re reading this article wondering if you need one — yes.
